Local writer Janine Mellini is the former author of the popular "Paw Prints" blog, Rescue Me Morris! photo gallery and Rescue Tales pages previously published in a daily Morris County newspaper. Her new blog, PetsFurRescue, picks up where that blog and those pages left off by providing ongoing news and items of interest about local rescue groups, animal shelters, pet-related events, pets and pet people, while also posting current photos and information about pets available for adoption in Morris County and surrounding areas. Have pet news or want to post pets for adoption, send me the information and photos at petsfurrescue@yahoo.com.

Weekend is full of pet-related events, including adoptions

Don't ask me how, but Friday just got away from me. Could be this miserable cold I'm fighting or it could be advancing age? I'd rather believe it's the former. Health issues aside, I hope it's not too late to share some pet-related events and photos of pets for adoption.

Saturday, March 5, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Special cat and kitten pet adoption sponsored by Friends of the Randolph Animal Pound, 1345 Sussex Turnpike, Randolph. Adoption fees: $50. Dogs and other small animals also available for adoption. For more information, call 973-886-1485 or e-mail doggie@optonline.net.

Sunday, March 6, 1 to 5 p.m.: Get a free ice custard at Rita's, 286 Route 206, Flanders, by bringing in a donated item for homeless animals at Eleventh Hour Rescue. Items needed are: new cat or dog toys, cat litter, collars and leashes, food and water bowls, cleaning supplies, dog bedding, garbage bags, dog treats, dog and cat food, bleach, paper towels, old towels, laundry detergent and/or blankets.

Pets for adoption

This is Diddley from Eleventh Hour Rescue.  He’s a young Spaniel mix with a very interesting under-bite in his jaw structure that makes him look like a Chihuahua.  It’s so unusual that it gives his appearance a lot of great character and really makes him look unique.  However, what makes this cute, little 30-pound guy even more special is the way he wants to hug you and the affection he gives to humans and other animals as well.  His foster mom reports that he likes to help groom the cats that he lives with by giving lots of good kisses to the very patient felines.  He is extremely gentle and loving in his actions.  He loves a car ride and is crate trained, too.  To read more about Diddley, to see all of EHR's adoptable dogs, to see upcoming events, or to make a donation, visit  www.ehrdogs.org.
