Less loveable animals find refuge in Wanaque at Snakes-N-Scales and Turtle Tales
Because April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, now’s a good time to mention rescue efforts being done on behalf of what many may consider less-than-cuddly kinds of critters, like those kept by people such as Britain’s Crocodile Dundee wannabe mentioned above.
Often these types of animals are owned by people with no knowledge of how to properly care for them, or who have little understanding of the inherent nature of these creatures. While the “cruelty” is sometimes unintentional — occurring because of the owner’s ignorance regarding proper care and handling – it also can result from intentional harm.
While abuse against domesticated animals usually is well-publicized, the same often isn’t true when it comes to cold-blooded species. Just ask Bill Boesenberg, owner of Snakes-N-Scales and Turtle Tales in Wanaque. It’s the largest Animal Outreach Educational Organization of its kind in New Jersey. In his work, he often encounters the abuse and neglect of these less-endearing animals.
His mission is to remove them from harm, rehabilitate them and return them to health, whenever possible. Along with his staff of dedicated animal caretakers and educators, Boesenberg, an expert in the field of herpetology (reptiles), strives to teach the public about the value of these animals in the wild, while discouraging them from keeping them as household pets. These animals, he explains, require special care and handling.
Snakes-N-Scales maintains over 500 reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. Boesenberg and his Snakes-N-Scales staff present informative, educational and fun programs and parties for audiences of all ages ( including school groups, Scouts and other organizations) in an effort to share their concern and respect for these unique animals.
While Boesenberg and his educators enjoy sharing the lighter side of their work with audiences — the alligators pulled out of people’s pools or the monitor lizard found wandering along the turnpike – they also share stories of the more tragic incidents, too. Like the ball python that was burned when its owner decided to use a 500-watt flood light to replace the recommended 50-watt tank light to keep it warm. Or, a turtle with a hole drilled into its shell and a hook inserted so that a leash could be attached.
Many of the Snakes-N-Scales animals were rescued from a variety of situations. Some were unwanted or abused pets, others were confiscated by authorities or picked up in neighborhoods, along roads or from abandoned apartments, but all of them now have found a safe, secure haven under the care of Boesenberg and his trained staff, who provide them with proper nourishment, appropriate habitats and medical attention for the rest of their lives.

'Furry Friday' means it's time to find your four-legged friend
Spring is a purr-fect time to find your new best friend at one of the area's animal shelters. This week, Eleventh Hour Rescue is featuring a cat named Andy (shown above).
Andy from Eleventh Hour Rescue was found roaming around a local neighborhood. Poor Andy had to fend for himself during this cold, snowy winter. He was finally rescued and is happy to be back indoors. Andy was obviously someone's pet at one point -- he is very affectionate and domesticated. He uses his litter box regularly.
Volunteers suspect that someone moved and left Andy behind or dumped him off in a strange neighborhood. When Eleventh Hour rescued him, they removed a collar that was extremely tight around his neck. Andy also needed surgery to remove a stick that was stuck in his gums. Through all of this, Andy remained a total sweetheart. He is 1- to 2-years-old, neutered and up to date on shots.
Andy is FIV positive. FIV is contagious to other cats through deep bite wounds. It is not contagious to humans or dogs. Andy needs a permanent home or foster home that will show him the love and affection he deserves. To read more about Andy, to see all of the shelter's adoptable pets, to view upcoming events, or to make a donation, visit www.ehrdogs.org.

Look for 'pot of gold' at the Montville Animal Shelter during month-long St. Patrick's Day celebration
As you can see, I can't resist "dressing up" my teacup Yorkshire Terrier Emma for the holidays. This time, it was for St. Patrick's Day. She tolerates it just long enough for me to snap a photo or two, but then I have to take off the costume and apologize with a biscuit.
I'm not the only pet person who enjoys celebrating the holidays. The Montville Animal Shelter and Montville Pet Parents are celebrating, too, with a "Luck of the Irish" adoption promotion. Everyone who adopts an animal during the month of March will get to select a "gold" coin from the pot of gold that will save them some green. Each coin is printed with a discount ranging from $5 to $20 off any adoption completed during the month. Adopters also will receive a free adoption kit.
Hours for Montville Animal Shelter, 86 River Road, are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon; Sunday by appointment. For more information, call 973-334-6410 or e-mail to maswecare@yahoo.com.

Neglected at drug house, this pit bull deserves the TLC he's missed
Scooter Pie when he was first rescued. |
Scooter Pie since receiving foster care. |
Searching for your new best friend? Consider Scooter Pie, a pit bull deserving of a loving home and nurturing family.
Scooter Pie came to Eleventh Hour Rescue from a known drug house in a major New Jersey city. The authorities stepped in and seized everything and that was fortunate for Scooter Pie, who had been seriously neglected, undernourished, and suffering from a terrible case of non-contagious mange from years of neglect.

The authorities stepped in and seized everything and that was fortunate for Scooter Pie, who had been seriously neglected, undernourished, and suffering from a terrible case of non-contagious mange from years of neglect.
Currently in the shelter's foster program, Scooter Pie is housetrained, crate trained and easy to walk on a leash. Since his skin and fur have deteriorated to such an extent, he needs a coat to keep him warm outside. He plays well with his toys and other dogs, too.
This is a kind and gentle soul that has had a tough start in life. Why not give this guy a second chance at the good life? To read more about Scooter Pie or to see all of Eleventh Hour Rescue's adoptable pets, visit www.ehrdogs.org.

Celebrate March as 'Adopt-a-Rescued Guinea Pig' month by adopting a small animal from Randolph Animal Pound
Did you know that March is "Adopt-A-Rescued Guinea Pig Month"? When most people think about adopting rescue animals, small pets like the guinea pig don't often come to mind. The Randolph Animal Pound at 1345 Sussex Turnpike now has a small animal rescue program which includes guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and more.
If you're not ready to adopt a cat or dog, maybe a smaller animal is a sensible alternative to pet ownership. Although guinea pigs are in the rodent family, they're cute, cuddly -- and lovable. Guinea pigs like to be held and played with, plus they're pretty low maintenance in the care department.
The only obligations you have as a guinea pig owner are to feed the pet, play with them and make sure they have sufficient drinking water and a clean enclosure. Guinea pigs can be fed a brand of guinea pig mix readily available at pet food stores. They also enjoy eating vegetables.
For more information, on how to select a guinea pig and to make certain it's healthy, visit

Pets for adoption
This is Diddley from Eleventh Hour Rescue. He’s a young Spaniel mix with a very interesting under-bite in his jaw structure that makes him look like a Chihuahua. It’s so unusual that it gives his appearance a lot of great character and really makes him look unique. However, what makes this cute, little 30-pound guy even more special is the way he wants to hug you and the affection he gives to humans and other animals as well. His foster mom reports that he likes to help groom the cats that he lives with by giving lots of good kisses to the very patient felines. He is extremely gentle and loving in his actions. He loves a car ride and is crate trained, too. To read more about Diddley, to see all of EHR's adoptable dogs, to see upcoming events, or to make a donation, visit www.ehrdogs.org. Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter welcomes 22 new bundles of fur; adoptions scheduled in March
There's nothing like a brand new bouncing bundle of joy to liven up a household. But can you imagine welcoming 22 new lives into your home? Well, that's just what's happened at the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, 194 Route 10 West, East Hanover.
Twenty-two new puppies born in foster care were welcomed in this world and will be up for adoption in March. The "due dates" for these adoptions are: March 5 for Charity's six hound/terrier puppies; March 12 for Meghan's seven chihuahua/spaniel puppies; and March 26 for Angie's nine black-and-yellow lab mix puppies.
All puppies will be available for Special Companions Members from noon to 2 p.m. on the first day of adoption. After 2 p.m., they will be available to the general public for adoption. What is the Special Companions Membership program? Pay $35 and for the next three months, the shelter will do its best to locate the perfect pet for you. The program helps adopters looking to adopt harder-to-find pets, including puppies, purebred animals or small dogs. When a potential match for the adopter arrives at the shelter, those in the Special Companions Program are notified first, before the pet is available to the general public. Want more information? Visit http://www.njshelter.org/special.html.
Please donate
With 22 new mouths to feed, the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter is in need of donations. To see a complete list of what's needed, visit http://www.njshelter.org/WishList07.pdf.

Postal workers intercept box with puppy inside
Just when I thought human stupidity and cruelty had reached its zenith, another story of animal abuse hits the news that makes me wonder if there's any hope for mankind.
The story to which I refer is about a woman in Minnesota who tried mailing a puppy to Georgia via the U.S. Postal Service. The dog was found by postal workers in a box with no food, water or air holes. Yes, you read that right.
The postal employees reported the woman, who since has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty. Because she did not post bond, the puppy, a poodle-schnauzer mix named Guess, was placed into the guardianship of the city of Minneapolis. Guess has since been adopted.
