Local writer Janine Mellini is the former author of the popular "Paw Prints" blog, Rescue Me Morris! photo gallery and Rescue Tales pages previously published in a daily Morris County newspaper. Her new blog, PetsFurRescue, picks up where that blog and those pages left off by providing ongoing news and items of interest about local rescue groups, animal shelters, pet-related events, pets and pet people, while also posting current photos and information about pets available for adoption in Morris County and surrounding areas. Have pet news or want to post pets for adoption, send me the information and photos at petsfurrescue@yahoo.com.

The weekend is an ideal time to find your best friends at local shelters

Well, it's TGIF time again and that also means it is this blog's "Furry Friday" -- a good time to consider adopting a pet. The Randolph Animal Pound is one of the most active pet shelters in the Morris County area. Their volunteers, members of Friends of the Randolph Animal Pound, do good work to benefit rescued pets. The same goes for Furever Home Dog Rescue, also in Randolph, and Eleventh Hour Rescue. Here are some animals for adoption in this area.

Lilly is a 16 week old female pit bull terrier. She was born in a home and taken into foster care. Lilly is the delight of the family and she gets along with the other pets (cats and dogs). The foster family is working on house training. Lilly is a smart and sweet doggie and is learning fast. If you are interested in Lilly, there is a short application (vet references are required). E-mail Doggie54@optonline.net; call 973-886-1485.
Hi, I am Andy!I am a very fun pup! I am active, I love people and I love other dogs! I am golden retriever/shepherd mix pup about 1 year old and about 60-65 pounds. I was in a high kill shelter and time was running out for me. Lucky for me, the kind folks from Furever Home Dog Rescue fell in love with me and brought me to NJ. They will care for me until the perfect furever home comes along. Unfortunately, it was found out that I contracted heart worm. Something that is easily prevented, but no one care about me enough to give me my monthly heart worm preventive pill. I am now on heartworm preventative and I am ready to start a new chapter in my life. I have also been brought utd with my shots & I have been neutered. As you can see from my pictures, I am a real cutie! I am very friendly, energetic and I love to play. I am now looking for a home. I would really like to have a nice yard to play in and an active family that will love me. I know I will love them! To make me yours, e-mail FureverHomeRescue@att.net and request an adoption application.
Pumpkin is a three-legged, young, female Beagle/Hound mix.  Found freezing to death in the cold of New York City with a severely infected wound, she needed to have her front leg removed.  She is now 100 percent better and shows no signs of missing her leg.  This is one active dog that gets around just fine.  Pumpkin is a total sweetheart, loves other dogs and kids too.  She is a busy girl, less than 2 years old, and will do best in an active household.  This is an irresistible little girl that you will fall in love with at first sight, I know I did!  To read more about Pumpkin, to see all of Eleventh Hour Rescue's adoptable pets, to see our upcoming events, or to make a donation, visit  www.ehrdogs.org
Bear (at top) and Koda are 6-year-old Golden Retriever mix dogs. They walk well on a leash, are house trained and get along well with other pets. Their owner died and they ended up at the Randolph Animal  Pound.  If you would like information to adopt Koda, Bear, or one of the many cats and dogs waiting for loving homes, call or stop by Randolph Animal Pound, 1345 Sussex Turnpike, Randolph. Hours 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Call 973-989-7090 or visit www.pound.petfinder.org,
