Easter is ideal time to expand your four-legged family by adopting a shelter pet in need

Easter is a good time of year celebrate the renewal spring brings by adopting a new four-legged family member. I adopted Emma, my 14-year-old Yorkshire Terrier 10 years ago when she was 4 years old. Other than annoying her with holiday photos (see above), she is the reigning queen of our household -- as it should be, according to Emma.

Here are some pets looking for good homes. If you are considering adding a pet to your household, please consider adoption -- these are great animals who need -- and deserve -- a new start.
Bunnie is a new arrival at Furever Home Dog Rescue. And, we are very happy she is here because she is such a joy! Bunnie is approximately 1 year old and is a Labrador mix. Bunnie is a friendly, gentle, good-natured girl who enjoys being in the company of people and other dogs. This happy, affectionate girl is in search of a family to love. She would be a wonderful addition to any family. To make her yours, e-mail FureverHomeRescue@att.net and request an adoption application.
Meet JWOW from Eleventh Hour Rescue.  This is a beautiful German Shepherd female mix.  She is under 2 years old, and is a stunning beauty.  She’s always happy and has a very pleasant demeanor.   Due to allergies, her owner had to give her up and she now is available for adoption.  She is less than 50 ponds, and a perfect size for any home environment.  To see more about JWOW, to see all Eleventh Hour Resuce pets, to check upcoming events, or to make a donation, visit  www.ehrdogs.org.

Dying man's wish is to find home for his beloved dogs

Acee and Reesee need a home.

I recently received this e-mail from a contact at Eleventh Hour Rescue. While the shelter receives many pleas for dogs in need, this particular story touched the heart of Eleventh Hour's President and Founder Linda Schiller, who has had subsequent conversations with the owner since. Here's the story based on an e-mail Eleventh Hour received on April 7:

"My name is Heather, and I'm trying to help a dying man place his two beloved dogs.
The man's name is Mr. Fuller. He really doesn't have long, maybe a week or two at most, though he believes it's more like a couple of days.
He has cancer, and he says the only thing that keeps him hanging on is that he wants to find a place for his two dogs.
He loves those dogs so much.
My heart just breaks for him, and just thinking of those dogs going to a shelter when they've been so loved is just awful.
I can't let that happen to them.

If you can help or know of someone who can, please contact me immediately. I'm in Pennsylvania, but Mr. Fuller is out of state.
After talking to you, I'll give you his contact information. I also have contact information for a friend of his in case something has happened to him.
Here is a bit about the dogs. I've also attached pictures of them.
Reesee is a 3 1/2-year-old female. Mr. Fuller got her from a shelter when she was very young.
She is a mother-type and feels the need to take care of kittens and puppies. She loves kids and all people. Mr. Fuller said she'd be your friend even if you pointed a gun at her. She just loves everyone. She is house trained, current on vaccinations, and spayed.
She is kid, dog, and cat friendly. If a cat runs, she will chase it, but she won't hurt it.

Acee (as in AC) is about 1 1/2 years old. Reesee found her one day and started caring for her. She was about 6 weeks old.
Mr. Fuller asked around the neighborhood and found out she'd been abandoned by a family that moved. He took her in.
She had Parvo and had to be treated. Obviously, she survived. I was told that she has never known anything but love and kindness, and it shows in her personality.
She is great with kids, other dogs, and cats. She, too, will chase a cat if it runs.
She's house trained, current on vaccinations, and spayed.

These dogs are bonded and MUST stay together. They love each other too much to be separated.
Since they are already losing their owner, it seems unfair that they might have to lose each other, too. So again, they must stay together.

Both are very gentle, well behaved, sweet dogs. They are very content just to have contact with their person. They are both used to medical devices and wheelchairs. Mr. Fuller suggested that they would make excellent therapy dogs.
Both are very easy to handle. They love baths and will jump right into the tub.
Mr. Fuller promises that they are the best socialized dogs you could ever meet and that, after just a week of kindness and treats, they will happily bond with a new person.

Anyone who might be able to take these dogs in should contact me ASAP.
I'm acting as the go-between for Mr. Stuart Fuller.

Time is of the essence.

Heather"
Upon receiving the above plea, Linda Schiller contacted the owner directly and reassured him that we will take good care of his two dogs and find them the perfect home.  Here are her comments from those conversations:
"All my faith is wrapped up in you".  These were the words of a dying me to me.  I don't know what I was expecting during that first phone call.  I guess I was prepared to talk to someone was weak or scared or needy.  Instead I was talking to a strong, self assured and independent gentleman who shared stories of his incredible life and his deep love for his dogs with me.  During our conversations I found out he had built and flown planes....that he have lived on a ranch and an airport....he had sky dived...he had traveled extensively...he was 6 foot tall and was a football player in school...he had a daughter that was a great lady and a beautiful granddaughter too... and his two dogs were family and meant the world to him . He told me little stories about his dogs and what they liked and how you needed to get on your knees at night and whisper in their ears "I love you Resee...I love you Acee" over and over again.   We talked for hours and only once during that initial conversation did he cry.  He broke down when he told me that he had promised Resee and Acee that he would always love them and take care of them and nothing bad would ever happen to them and he tearfully told me that he was afraid he was breaking his promise to them.  He told me that he had saved Resee from a shelter but she had saved him from despair....and then they both, he and Resee, had saved Acee and how they were a happy family of three.  He seemed embarrassed and apologized for crying.
This man and his great compassion had so moved me that now  it was my turn to apologize for crying and I swore to him at that moment that we at Eleventh Hour would keep his promise for him.
So it was decided that we would take these two wonderful companions. During the next few days Mr. Fuller and I spoke every day at length about the dogs...about him...about his life,,,about who he was and who he had become. Something happened during those chats...we became friends. I remember telling him the one day that I had something to tell him that I felt guilty about ...I was feeling sorry for myself because I did not had the opportunity to know him better during his lifetime.  He laughed and told me that he was just thankful that he had gotten to know me now and that he was so relieved and happy that we were going to help his dogs find a family to love them the way he had.
Resee and Acee are coming to us today.  I am proud of us for honoring a dying man's wish but my heart is breaking for one of the strongest people I have ever met. Mr. Fuller is someone who loves and cares so deeply, so unselfishly, that he has made the decision to face the end alone without the comfort of his two best friends for their sake.  What a privilege to get to know this gentleman.  Thank you Stuart for entrusting us with the care of your 4 legged kids. We will find them a family to keep them safe and loved until it is their time to come and meet you at the Rainbow Bridge.  God bless you and keep you. -- Linda Schiller"

Reese and Acee are available for adoption from Eleventh Hour Rescue.  If you are interested in adopting, visit www.ehrdogs.org and fill out an application for these two beautiful girls.

The weekend is an ideal time to find your best friends at local shelters

Well, it's TGIF time again and that also means it is this blog's "Furry Friday" -- a good time to consider adopting a pet. The Randolph Animal Pound is one of the most active pet shelters in the Morris County area. Their volunteers, members of Friends of the Randolph Animal Pound, do good work to benefit rescued pets. The same goes for Furever Home Dog Rescue, also in Randolph, and Eleventh Hour Rescue. Here are some animals for adoption in this area.

Lilly is a 16 week old female pit bull terrier. She was born in a home and taken into foster care. Lilly is the delight of the family and she gets along with the other pets (cats and dogs). The foster family is working on house training. Lilly is a smart and sweet doggie and is learning fast. If you are interested in Lilly, there is a short application (vet references are required). E-mail Doggie54@optonline.net; call 973-886-1485.
Hi, I am Andy!I am a very fun pup! I am active, I love people and I love other dogs! I am golden retriever/shepherd mix pup about 1 year old and about 60-65 pounds. I was in a high kill shelter and time was running out for me. Lucky for me, the kind folks from Furever Home Dog Rescue fell in love with me and brought me to NJ. They will care for me until the perfect furever home comes along. Unfortunately, it was found out that I contracted heart worm. Something that is easily prevented, but no one care about me enough to give me my monthly heart worm preventive pill. I am now on heartworm preventative and I am ready to start a new chapter in my life. I have also been brought utd with my shots & I have been neutered. As you can see from my pictures, I am a real cutie! I am very friendly, energetic and I love to play. I am now looking for a home. I would really like to have a nice yard to play in and an active family that will love me. I know I will love them! To make me yours, e-mail FureverHomeRescue@att.net and request an adoption application.
Pumpkin is a three-legged, young, female Beagle/Hound mix.  Found freezing to death in the cold of New York City with a severely infected wound, she needed to have her front leg removed.  She is now 100 percent better and shows no signs of missing her leg.  This is one active dog that gets around just fine.  Pumpkin is a total sweetheart, loves other dogs and kids too.  She is a busy girl, less than 2 years old, and will do best in an active household.  This is an irresistible little girl that you will fall in love with at first sight, I know I did!  To read more about Pumpkin, to see all of Eleventh Hour Rescue's adoptable pets, to see our upcoming events, or to make a donation, visit  www.ehrdogs.org
Bear (at top) and Koda are 6-year-old Golden Retriever mix dogs. They walk well on a leash, are house trained and get along well with other pets. Their owner died and they ended up at the Randolph Animal  Pound.  If you would like information to adopt Koda, Bear, or one of the many cats and dogs waiting for loving homes, call or stop by Randolph Animal Pound, 1345 Sussex Turnpike, Randolph. Hours 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Call 973-989-7090 or visit www.pound.petfinder.org,

Morris County shelters have many pets for adoption

The warmer months ahead are a good time to consider adopting a pet. The local shelters have many from which to select. Here are a few that currently are available for adoption. Do you see your new best friend below?

Kassie is a little bundle of joy. She is a new arrival at Furever Home Dog Rescue in Randolph. She is about 10 to 11 weeks old and is a labrador/shepherd mix with a beautiful soft coat that is a mix of brown and black. Kassie's personality is as adorable as her appearance. She has a lot of love to give. If you have a "furever" home for Kassies, request an adoption application by e-mailing FureverHomeRescue@att.net.

DONATIONS NEEDED:  Lady Bug from Eleventh Hour Rescue is going blind and needs expensive cataract surgery now to restore her eye sight.  “Lady Bug” is a tiny black poodle that lives up to her name!
Lady Bug had a wonderful home in Georgia, but her owner found herself homeless and shelters do not allow dogs. Poor Lady Bug was given to a hoarder who already had 16 dogs and 16 cats and could not take care of all of them.  When she arrived at Eleventh Hour Rescue, her coat was badly matted and she was in need of a grooming. After her “day at the spa”, our volunteers could not believe it was the same dog.
Lady Bug is senior girl around 9 years old, weighs less than 10 pounds, spayed, up-to-date on her shots, and gets along other dogs. She is large enough to go up and down stairs (and jump off the couch), but small enough to be the 'lap dog' companion. Lady Bug loves the attention of being a "'pocketbook pooch."  Her gentle and loving nature will melt your heart.
To read more about Lady Bug or to make a donation online, visit  www.ehrdogs.orgOr, mail your donation to:  Eleventh Hour Rescue, PO Box 218, Rockaway, NJ  07866, Attn: Lady Bug Fund.

Meet Smiley from Eleventh Hour Rescue.  She earned that name because she always has a smile on her face.  She is about 3 years old and is a hound/lab/shepherd mix.  Smiley is a very gentle, sweet girl who just wants to sit by your side or on your lap and get a nice belly rub.  She is very passive and submissive and would easily fit into any home situation.  She would be especially easy for a first time dog owner to adopt.  To read more about Smiley, to see all adoptable dogs, to see upcoming events, or to make a donation, visit  www.ehrdogs.org.

Pet fundraisers, fostering opportunities aplenty in Morris County

I apologize for the delay in posting. Looking for a job after 34 years is a bigger -- and more time consuming -- project that I imagined. But on the bright side, there are many things happening in the pet world that will provide some much needed rest and relaxation for us all.

The Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter invites pet lovers to come explore the wine regions of the world on Wednesday, May 18, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. during its Second Annual Wine Tasting at the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park. There will be many diverse wines for sampling, as well as some boutique spirits to savor. A silent auction will add to the fun. Cost is $65 per person. All proceeds will benefit the animals in the East Hanover shelter's care. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 973-386-0068 or visit http://www.njshelter.org.

Dining for Dogs and Cats will take place Wednesday, March 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and from 5 to 10 p.m. for dinner at Chili's Bar & Grill, 138 Route 10, East Hanover, to benefit the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter. A portion of the cost for your meal (take-out or dine-in) will be donated. Just mention the "Give Back" program to help homeless pets.

The annual "Ruff Draught Beer Tasting" to benefit Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter will be held Tuesday, March 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Madison Elks Club, 192 Main St., Madison. Sample beers from around the world. Tickets are $35 per person and includes tasty beer snacks.

The shelter also will hold a Shred-a-Thon on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, in the shelter's parking lot at 94 Route 10 West, East Hanover. Drive up in your car or truck and assistants will help in unloading. Materials can be paper, plastic bags or cardboard boxes (it is not necessary to remove staples or paperclips). After shredding, all paper is recycled for processing. Suggested donation is $5 to $10 and benefits  the shelter's animals.

People who love pets are needed to provide foster homes for homeless animals. Furever Home Dog Rescue in Randolph is always looking for people to foster pups.  If you don't have the time to foster, please pass along the word that foster families are desperately needed. There are many puppies, young and adult dogs in the shelter system that are endanger of being euthanized due to lack of space. Print out the flyer below for distribution (courtesy of Furever Home Dog Rescue). For more information, visit

Foster a Homeless Dog!

Furever Home Dog Rescue  http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NJ630.html saves adoptable dogs from overpopulated high-kill shelters in the south. We are looking for people who are willing to open their homes to foster a dog until they are adopted and placed in their furever homes.

We have puppies, young and older dogs of different breeds that need foster homes. Please consider helping wonderful dogs get a second chance. With your help, we can save more dogs from being destroyed simple because there is no more room at the shelter.

If interested call email FureverHomeRescue@att.net
