Local volunteers work tirelessly to place homeless pets

I really admire the tenacious nature of the volunteers around Morris County who work tirelessly to find homeless pets loving families. With the number of animals in need of care, it's a daunting task that never seems to discourage these selfless individuals. Below are some of the animals in need of placement. If you can offer one a loving home, please consider it. These animals -- and their rescuers -- will appreciate your help.

Peter, an American bull dog/terrier Mix from Eleventh Hour Rescue, spent the first few years of his life living in a shelter, waiting for a family to choose him. Two years ago, his turn finally came and a wonderful family took him home and gave him a great life. Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances, the family is no longer able to care for him. Peter is being returned to the shelter and will surely spend his days wondering why he is back there and when his family will return for him. Peter is 4 to 5 years old, is housebroken and has graduated two levels of basic obedience classes at Pawsitive Experience in Rockaway. Peter lived with two children and slept with them every night. He is loving, obedient and eager to please. He loves to cuddle, but also loves to play with his toys or go for walks. Peter needs to be the only pet in the home, but we promise he will be worth it. Pets of all kinds available for adoption at Randolph Animal Shelter

Sunny Nowell, assistant animal control officer in Randolph, takes Pearl for a walk in her stroller at the Randolph Animal Shelter.

Sorry for the delay in posting. Spring is a busy time for us all and it's easy to put things off. One thing you shouldn't put off is adopting a pet if adding a four-legged member to your family is on your list of "things to do."

Fortunately, for those of us living in Morris County, there are many reputable animal shelters and rescue groups from which to adopt a pet. Don't think it's only about cats or dogs, either. Many offer other pets, including birds, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and more.

Claudine Cheung, a member of the Friends of the Randolph Animal Pound, tells me there all all types of cats available now at the shelter, which is located at 1345 Sussex Turnpike in Randolph. Many of these animals already are in foster care and can be placed in permanent homes immediately.

An adoption event is planned for Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you need more information, call Cheung at 973-886-1485 or e-mail Doggie54@optonline.net.

These four kittens are in foster care. They love dogs, cats and other animals. They will be at the special adoption event on May 14.
